Something About Food

I am learning about food. I will write what I have learnt.

We require food for energy, to grow and to fight diseases. A balanced diet provides the body with all nutrients in the right quantities. The nutrients that our body needs to remain healthy and fit are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals.

Proteins - Proteins are body building food. They help repair damaged parts of our body. They help us to grow. E.g. milk, eggs.

Carbohydrates – They are energy giving food. E.g. wheat, banana, potatoes.

Fats – Fats provide energy and warmth to the body. They are stored in the body and used when the body needs energy. Too much fat is not good for the body. E.g. oil, cheese, ghee

Vitamins – Vitamins are needed to fight diseases and help in working of the body. They are called protective food. They improve eye-sight, heal wounds and keep the bones and skin healthy. E.g. fruits, eggs, milk.

Minerals – Minerals are used by the body like vitamins and have same properties


Food should be properly cooked, otherwise nutrients are lost. Food can be preserved in the refrigerator by adding preservative, or by canning and drying. Water is also important for staying healthy.
